grow deep, rise high: nourish our mind

Why critical reading?

  • Critical reading is key to understanding social, educational, economic, and political issues.
  • Without critical reading skills, individuals are more likely to fall victim to fake news, biased reporting, or propaganda, leading them to make decisions based on false or misleading information. They are more susceptible to manipulation by advertisers, political leaders, or media outlets who may exploit them with biased or persuasive narratives.
  • A lack of critical reading prevents individuals from properly evaluating evidence or considering multiple perspectives, resulting in poorly informed choices in both personal and professional life.
  • Without the ability to question or analyse texts, people may passively accept information without challenging assumptions, limiting their intellectual growth and ability to think independently.
  • Without critical thinking, individuals may gravitate toward echo chambers, reinforcing their existing biases and failing to engage with diverse viewpoints, leading to a narrow, unbalanced worldview.

Mistakes in reading

“Many people make some common mistakes when reading critically, which can affect their understanding, performance, and decision-making:

  • Mistake 1: Not defining the purpose
  • Mistake 2: Not considering the context
  • Mistake 3: Not questioning the assumptions
  • Mistake 4: Not evaluating the evidence
  • Mistake 5: Not recognising the biases
  • Mistake 6: Not forming your own opinion.”
